Following a successful 6-month trial period, Ocean Network Express (ONE) UK, in collaboration with Freightliner, one of the UK's largest maritime intermodal logistics operator, is extending their adoption of HVO100 fuel for all cargo transportation via rail.

HVO, a 100% renewable fuel, is derived from sources such as vegetable oils and waste-based fats and oils from the food industry.

By transitioning to HVO, emissions of CO2 can be reduced by up to 90%, presenting a significant improvement over conventional diesel typically utilized to power freight trains. The fuel is rigorously certified, ensuring the traceability and sustainability of its source materials.

 “ONE UK, in partnership with Freightliner, is pleased to continue the transportation of our cargo inland using rail powered by HVO100. Over our successful 6-month pilot period, we calculated that an incredible 488 tonnes of CO₂ emissions were saved by switching to this renewable fuel. We thank Freightliner for collaborating with us to make a greener and more sustainable supply chain as ONE continues to find innovative ways to achieve our goal of net zero by 2050,” commented Nick Reay, head of operations for ONE UK.

This expansion of the initiative will be integrated into ONE's broader green rail offerings, wherein customers have the option to purchase carbon reduction certificates, acknowledging their efforts to diminish their carbon footprint.

Having collaborated since 2018, ONE and Freightliner recently announced a new 5-year contract, emphasizing their joint commitment to sustainability. This agreement not only ensures seamless intermodal connections from London Gateway and the Port of Southampton to key destinations across the UK but also underscores both entities' dedication to seeking and providing environmentally responsible solutions to the UK supply chain.
